Our photo of the week comes from Alisa Whitley and is a very gripping portrait of her mom. When I first saw this image it really grabbed my attention. The strong contrast really brings out the wrinkles in her hands and the way that she is just gripping the coffee cup really add tension to the image. The image makes my mind start to wonder about this person, who is she, what type of work did she do, what is she talking about? All of these thoughts go through my mind. By focusing on just a small detail of the person she really tells a story of who her mother is and captures an image that will always bring her back to these coffee table moments with mom. I have had an interest in photography all of my life and recently decided to get “serious” about it so I can make a career change . In January I started a 365 photo project inspired by Tasra Dawson. My goal is to improve my photography and be more observant of my surroundings and the beauty in things that so many people don’t see.
On a recent visit with my parents, I decided I wanted to get some shots of them and the details of some of the things they do. This photo of my Mom’s hands is a wonderful portrait of her in my eyes. There’s no way I could count the hours over the years that she and I have sat at the kitchen table drinking coffee and discussing life – her holding her coffee cup just as she is in this photo. From laughing to crying to giving advice and venting about what’s bothering us, we’ve done it all over coffee at the kitchen table. As I detailed in Day 84 of my blog, her hands are the ones that have taught me so many things that have made me the person I am. When I look at this photo I remember not only the talks we’ve had over coffee, but the things I’ve watched her do all my life. I hope when others see this, they will be taken back to some wonderful moments with their mother or grandmother.
