Today Canon Announced a brand new DSLR, the EOS-1D X. This new DSLR body will replace the current Canon 1D and 1Ds models and is supposed to be a mix of high quality resolution along with speed. The camera is slated to be out in March next year with a street price of $6,800. The EOS 1D X has a brand new sensor which is a full-frame 18.1 megapixel sensor. The new sensor has a sensitivity range from ISO 100-51200, expandable up to a staggering ISO 204,800. Canon also put a new autofocus (AF) system and new metering technology into the camera. The EOS-1D X has three DIGIC processors. The image processors are a Dual DIGIC 5+ which can handle 17 times more processing speed than DIGIC 4. Canon has also included a third processor, a DIGIC 4 just for metering and AF control. This should make the new metering and AF system extremely responsive and I can’t wait to check out how well this performs. The new Digic 5 processors and sensor will give you a 2-stop improvement in noise performance.

Some of the other key features of the EOS 1D X

  • Brand new 61-point autofocus system which features 41 cross-type points.
  • New AF Configuration Tool allows for customized setting of tracking sensitivity.
  • Enhanced 1080p HD video.
  • Multiple Exposure Modes with the ability to combine up to 9 images. This might be really cool for HDR photography!
  • Movies that exceed 4GB will be split up automatically which allows for continuous recording up to 29 minutes 59 seconds.
  • Video has manual audio level control which you can control before and during movie recording.
  • Shutter is rated for 400,000 cycles so might last 2 years for my shooting!
