While most of the other camera manufacturers have been building small APS-C mirrorless cameras for awhile now Canon has been patiently waiting along the sidelines. Today they announced their entry into the space with the APS-C Mirrorless camera. It’s basically a point and shoot version of the Rebel T4i with the ability to use interchangeable lenses. If you want a high quality and small camera to carry around with you this camera looks like it might be pretty slick. Here are my thoughts from looking over the press release and specs, once I can get my hands on one i’ll do a full review.

Top Tech Specs for the Canon EOS M

  • Sensor – 18-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor: The Canon EOS M has a an 18-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor which is the same as the Rebel T4i along with a DIGIC 5 image processor.
  • ISO: The EOS M offers an ISO range up to ISO 12,800 and expandable to ISO 25,600.
  • Video: A highlight canon is focusing on is the EOS M’s ability to shoot video. It captures MPEG-4 videos in the following framerates: 1080p at 24, 25, or 30 frames per second. Another great part of video is their Movie Servo AF. With this the camera can maintain focusing during the recording of videos.
  • Touchscreen LCD: No viewfinder in this compact camera but instead a big LCD on the back. It
    has a 3 inch 1,040 million-dot resolution touchscreen LCD. The screen even has multitouch capabilities like the now famous “pinch-to-zoom” that Apple created or the ability to tap to focus a shot.
  • 31-point autofocus system: The autofocus is a hybrid AF system with phase and contrast detection. The autofocus from what i’ve heard is very fast and spot on.
  • Use your own lenses!: This is a great feature, with the Mount Adapter EF-EOS M you can mount your existing Canon EOS EF and EF-S DSLR lenses. Using a lens like the newer pancake 40mm f/2.8 this opens up a lot of possibilities and you don’t have to bug any special lenses.

    Canon is also releasing two new lenses along with the EOS M. The first comes with the EOS M kit and is a prime lens, the EF-M 22mm f/2 STM. The new acronym STM stands for stepping motor which helps to keep the focusing pretty much silent and also very quick. They are also releasing the EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 STM.

    The EOS M and 22mm STM lens kit will run you $799.99, and will be available in black or white. The 18-55mm STM lens will run $299.99 and the mount adapter $199.99. It’s pricey for a point and shoot but looks to be a pretty powerful package for on the go video shooting or stills when you don’t want to lug around your DSLR. For quick family trips or just on the street shooting where you want a very compact camera this might work great.
