With all of the advanced editing features that Photoshop have sometimes I think the most useful tools in editing are the Dodge and Burn tools. The light and dark areas of an image really control the viewers eye, peoples eyes right away first go to the lightest part of the image. So you always want to use that to your advantage to direct the reader to the most important part of the shot. I burn in the background of portraits a lot, I want the focus to be on my subject not the background. Check out this Dodge and Burn tutorial to see how to really make an image more dramatic by using these 2 simple tools. We also have a step by step walkthrough of an outdoor portrait and the steps used to dodge and burn it online here: Dodge and Burn photoshop tutorial
