A little while back I posted an article “Hacking the Lightroom splash screen” that a lot of people liked. Matt Kloskowski had a fun take on it and posted a great way to use this as a prank for someone 🙂 You can check out his blog post here: TIP: A Fun, Mean, and Totally Useless Lightroom Hack
This really got me thinking of other fun ways to play a prank on people. The great thing about technology is just about anything can be hacked into or tweaked which always gives us endless April fools day jokes we can play on people. Today i’ll show you a quick way to change the Lightroom icon that sit’s on your doc (instructions just for Mac, sorry PC users).
First lets find an icon to replace it with. Finding a fun and free icon is simple, just do a google search or head over to iconfactory.com which has some great free presets. For this example i’ll use a superhero icon that I downloaded for free here: Superhero free icons.
Second you will want to backup the current Lightroom default icon in case they want to change it back. You can find this by going into the applications folder –> right click on Lightroom and choose Show Package Contents –> Contents –> Resources –> here you will find a App.icns file. Copy this over to your desktop so you have a backup of the icon they use.
Next go back to the Applications folder and click on Lightroom and then enter Command-I on your keyboard. This always opens up the info screen which gives insights into the app. You will see the icon on the very top left corner and can click on it. While this window is still open do the same for the new icon file you want to replace it with. On the new icon file just click the icon on the top left and then enter Command-C on your keyboard to copy the image to the clipboard. Then click the icon for Lightroom on the top left and hold down Command-V to paste this new icon.
That’s it! Really easy to change the default icon for any Mac applications. Maybe change a friends computer to something spooky for Halloween and let us know what you did in the comments below 🙂
