Way long before Instagram was cool there was an app that I loved using for taking photos on my iPhone. Hipstamatic was a really cool retro style app that allowed you to create retro style images and the effects were actually pretty good. They now are moving into the video space and have a brand new app for the iPhone which takes the Hipstamatic approach to video.
It’s a pretty straight forward app, you have the ability to capture up to 15 seconds of video footage and then apply an effect to the image. They created the app to be quick and to the point so you won’t find any advanced editing or really any settings for the app. This does make using the app really nice and quick but depending on your needs you might be looking for something with more features. Usually for video I shoot it’s a few quick seconds of something going on and I don’t need to fully edit the video or add titles on my phone anyway, so for my needs this app works pretty well.
Here is the main screen where you capture the video. All you have to do is hold down the big red button to start capturing video. You do need at least 3 seconds of video and a max of 15 seconds. Another fun part is you can let go on the button to stop recording and then press the button again to record more snippets. That way it can be a little video montage of moments. Once you are done then you just click on the checkmark button.
Once you capture the video you will have a screen to select from the “film” type (the type of effect). There are only 5 effects included or you can purchase additional ones with an in app purchase. The effects are really good, I wish there were a few more than 5 included but they quality of them is good. It’s not just a color overlay on the video but includes real effects that make some of them feel like the video was shot with super 8 film from back in the day.
Once you pick the filter and have it process you can then add a caption and post the video to Vine, Instagram, Facebook, text or email.
Overall it’s a fun app to play around with and the film effects are a good quality. The app is super easy to use and fast so if you are looking for a fun way to get that 8mm feel check it out. You can get the app in the App store here:
