I have always been a huge fan of infrared photography. Back in college I fell in love with Kodak’s black and white infrared film and shot many landscapes with that film. For me it gave me the ability to turn a landscape into something more surreal, for the viewer to really look into the image and take a journey different from the norm. That’s what I really have always loved about Art and photography, it gives you an escape into another world for a minute, lets you sit back and dream about a scene.

In infrared photography, the film or image sensor used is sensitive to infrared light. This causes certain things like foliage to reflect a lot of light and become almost white. Usually an “infrared filter” is used; this lets infrared (IR) light pass through to the camera, but blocks all or most of the visible light spectrum (the filter thus looks black or deep red). Infrared photography really creates a surreal feel to the images and can be used so many ways to get interesting shots. Landscapes are one of the most common uses since it give you the most dramatic effect but you can also use infrared photography for portraits. It gives the skin tones a very soft and milky look and can be very beautiful.

We will have a post next week with some tips and how to’s for infrared photography but in the meantime here are 16 amazing examples of infrared photography to get you inspired and thinking. Update view our guide to photographing infrared photography or How to photography digital infrared.
