Ever since it first came out for the iPhone I have been a big fan of Hipstamatic. For those of you who aren’t aware of this cool little app yet, it’s a mobile app that was created to replicate a plastic camera made back in the 80’s. The original camera was a typical lo-fi plastic camera similar to a holga but with 35mm film it gave you a very distinct look to your images. Sharpness was never the name of the game for these plastic type cameras, instead they focused on soft images and sometimes even included light leaks due to the simple plastic bodies. The hipstamatic iPhone app is an app that lets you choose between different types of lenses and films. Each lens is just like applying a different filter to your image. Each lens gives you a different type of effect to the photo but what they all share in common is a very antique and retro look to the photos. You can also choose different film types which mainly effect the border around the image, although some do make the image black and white also.

The filters that they have really do a great job and I tend to take more photos with this app compared to the normal iPhone camera app. If you don’t have the app yet, you can get it in iTunes here: Hipstamatic iPhone app. These images also remind me that gear is fun to have but in the end not what makes the art. A good image is created by someone who has the vision for the image and is able to take that concept and turn it into a reality. The vision is the key to getting that great image not the camera or lens you have. I wrote a post a little while back along these same lines called “It’s all about the art not the gear“.
