Today I wanted to share a quick Lightroom tip to help you see what highlights and shadows are currently clipped in the photo. I got this question the other day from a friend doing some editing and wanted to make sure that everyone knew how easy it is to see what currently is clipped in your photo. Clipped is a term that basically means there is no detail available in that section so blacks are totally black and white are stark white with no detail at all. Sometimes this is fine and you might not want to have any detail, it always comes down to what your vision is for the image and getting the final image to match that vision. Many times though you will want to have detail in the shadows and highlights and when you aren’t sure if there is detail it’s easy to let Lightroom show you.
To see whats clipped just head over to the Develop module in Lightroom. In the histogram there is a triangle at the top right and left side. Click on this triangle on the left to turn on the ability to see what shadows will be clipped and click on the triangle on the right to see what highlights will be clipped.
When you have this turned on it will show the shadows that have no detail in blue and the highlights without detail in red.
You can also use the keyboard shortcut J to toggle this on and off 🙂
