Aside from the big news yesterday that Adobe is jumping into the touch app business with 3 new touch apps for Photoshop, adobe announced a few other new things for Photoshop 5.5. One is going to be a brand new way of purchasing Photoshop and the other creative suite applications. Adobe will now be allowing you to purchase Photoshop on a monthly basis with a subscription fee. Now while I think this option won’t be useful for most photographers I do see the need for a model like this. If you are a part time photographer and maybe only shoot weddings a few months out of the year, it would be beneficial to have a subscription to Photoshop for just those few months vs. paying for the full version.
You can get these on a month to month basic for a higher cost, or if you commit to a one year plan the monthly cost will go down. For a one year plan with Photoshop extended you will be paying $49/month and while that may seem like a lot if you are buying the full version (non-upgrade) that will set you back $999. If you are upgrading from a CS suite then the cost for this is only $349 to buy Photoshop. There are many factors that will make a big difference for people considering buying one of these products vs. subscribing. Mainly the use that you have planned for the application and if you are upgrading from a past version or not.
